Psychotherapist

To be able to work independently as a psychotherapist, you must complete a two-part, multi-year training program. A general preparatory course is followed by specialized training in a psychotherapeutic discipline at a state-recognized training institution. This program not only covers theoretical content but also provides valuable experience through at least 1,600 hours of practical training. A special feature of psychotherapeutic training is the emphasis on trainees‘ self-awareness; all candidates must complete a full course of therapy in the discipline they are studying (at least 400 hours in the case of psychoanalytic training).

Under the new Psychotherapy Act, the training will be „academized“ and, after a transitional period, will be offered exclusively as a regular degree program at universities.

Psychotherapists should not be confused with other professional groups in the medical/psychosocial field:

Psychiatrist

Psychiatrists are specialists in psychiatry and psychotherapy. As physicians, they are qualified and authorized to administer medication. In addition to their specialist training, they complete the so-called PSY diplomas (PSY1: psychosocial medicine; PSY2: psychosomatic medicine; PSY3: psychotherapeutic medicine). Training as a psychotherapist is not required, but physicians who are convinced of the usefulness and effectiveness of psychotherapy often complete training as psychotherapists themselves.

Psychologist

Psychologists have completed a university degree in psychology, and some have subsequently completed a specialization in clinical psychology. Neither a degree nor a specialization replaces psychotherapeutic training, although many psychologists choose to pursue additional training in psychotherapy.

The current subsidies from the various health insurance companies are:

ÖGK (formerly GKK)
€33.70

BVAEB (formerly BVA and VAEB insured)
€48.80

SVS (formerly SVA and SVB insured)
€45.00

Many private supplementary insurance plans also offer a cost subsidy as part of their services.

Since psychoanalysis/psychoanalytic psychotherapy is one of the four disciplines recognized by German statutory health insurance companies, German citizens insured in Germany can apply for reimbursement from their responsible German health insurance company.

Individual therapy, psychoanalysis

Online psychotherapy or online counseling is also possible by arrangement under special circumstances.
